The General Manager of the Sokoto State Transport Authority (SSTA), Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad, says the State Executive Council has approved the procurement of 10 Mitsubishi Canter trucks at the cost of N776.34 million and the construction of 30 commercial shops at the cost of N118.14 million.

Alhaji Muhammad disclosed this on Friday in Sokoto when he gave an update on ongoing measures to modernise operations of the transport agency.

He said the purchase of the 10 new Canter trucks was approved by Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto during the recent meeting of the State Executive Council, adding that the gesture was aimed at bolstering the haulage of goods to and from across Nigeria.

According to him, the trucks will boost inter-state movement of goods, facilitate trade and generate additional revenue for the state.

The General Manager also said the Council approved the construction of 30 commercial shops at the Authority's main motor park in Sokoto at the cost of N118.14 million.

He said the building of the new shops was aimed at shoring up the revenue base of the Authority as well as boosting socio-economic activities in the state.

Giving an update on the installation of trackers on the Authority's vehicles, Alhaji Muhammad disclosed that 76 vehicles have so far been covered.

He further stated that the conversion of the "Iyaye Mata" taxis meant for intra-city transportation of women-only from petrol to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is going on smoothly, adding that with this development, fares will reduce drastically as CNG is cheaper and more economical.

Alhaji Muhammad commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for his routine moral and financial support to ensure the success of the daily operations of the Authority.
