The Managing Director of the Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa ( Katukan Yauri) has commended Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, for his outstanding performance and transformative development across the state. Yelwa made the remarks when a delegation of the Kebbi State Media Team, led by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
He said the scale of development recorded under Governor Idris was such that one would think the administration had been in office for eight years rather than three years, stressing that the governor had made significant impact on the lives of Kebbi people, the physical development of the state and its image nationally and internationally.
The HYPPADEC Managing Director identified Agriculture as one of the sectors in which the governor had made remarkable achievements, particularly through the free distribution of fertiliser, agricultural inputs and equipment to farmers.
According to him, the quantity and quality of fertiliser distributed under the present administration was unprecedented, while interventions such as power tillers, solar-powered water pumps and other agricultural equipment had significantly reduced the burden on farmers and improved production.
He also commended the governor for ensuring that farmers continued to have access to their farmlands despite the security challenges inherited by the administration, noting that this was particularly important in a state where agriculture remained the mainstay of the people's livelihood.
Yelwa also praised the administration's achievements in education, including the construction and rehabilitation of schools, support for tertiary institutions and the regular payment of counterpart funds to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). He noted that the state government had continued to provide furniture and other facilities in schools while supporting tertiary institutions with operational vehicles.
He further commended the payment of tuition and scholarships for Kebbi indigenes studying within and outside the country, describing the administration's interventions in education as milestones that would have a lasting impact on the people. "Education has never seen it so good as it is being seen presently," he said.
On industrial development, the HYPPADEC boss said the administration was making deliberate efforts to position Kebbi as an investment destination by attracting investors, creating jobs and ensuring that host communities benefited directly from investments. He particularly highlighted the government's approach to solid mineral development, where investors are encouraged to involve host communities and landowners as stakeholders.
According to him, this inclusive approach promotes peace and ensures that the people are carried along in the development process. He also described the administration's infrastructure projects as projects capable of standing the test of time, citing the Koko-Mahuta-Zuru road as a major example that had significantly improved movement between communities and reduced travel time.
Yelwa further commended Governor Idris for his commitment to security and for maintaining a strong partnership with HYPPADEC in the development of communities within the commission's mandate. He disclosed that Kebbi State was one of the states that consistently supported HYPPADEC's activities, including through counterpart funding and provision of facilities. He said the state government had provided office accommodation for the commission in its headquarters and was partnering with HYPPADEC on the reticulation of the Yauri Waterworks, while also supporting interventions in schools, water supply and solar-powered water projects.
On the governor's second-term bid, Yelwa said the call was about the interest of the people rather than the personal ambition of the governor, stressing that "God has blessed him with the capacity to improve their lives." He said the people wanted Governor Idris to continue his programmes in infrastructure, healthcare, traditional institutions and human capital development.
The HYPPADEC Managing Director urged the people of Kebbi State to continue supporting Governor Idris, saying the achievements recorded within three years provided sufficient justification for continuity.
He said the governor had listened to the traditional institutions, religious leaders, youth, women and other stakeholders who had called on him to seek a second term, adding that the governor had accepted the responsibility in the interest of the state. "We are happy that he has accepted and is prepared, and we are prepared to work with him to ensure his success and ensure that we provide for Kebbi State a state that is going to be proud of by all," he stated.
