Kano State Ministry of Health has launched the second round of the Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE) Campaign, with a target of vaccinating over one million women of childbearing age across the state in a renewed effort to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus and improve maternal and child health outcomes.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Nabilusi Abubakar Ahmad
Public Relations Officer
Ministry of Health, and made available to Journalists in Kano.
Speaking at the official flag-off Press briefing, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described the campaign as another significant milestone in the State Government's commitment to protecting the lives of women and newborns through preventive healthcare interventions.
The Commissioner explained that the campaign targets women between the ages of 15 and 49 years, stressing that maternal and neonatal tetanus remains a deadly but entirely preventable disease through safe and effective vaccination. According to him, the vaccine not only protects women against tetanus but also provides life-saving immunity to their babies during childbirth and the early days of life.
Dr. Yusuf disclosed that the first round of the campaign recorded remarkable success, with over 100,000 women vaccinated across State, adding that the encouraging outcome has strengthened the government's resolve to expand coverage during the second phase.
He stated that trained healthcare workers would embark on house-to-house and community-based vaccination activities to ensure that eligible women, particularly those in underserved and hard-to-reach communities, are reached with the life-saving vaccine at no cost.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, to strengthening PHCs reducing maternal and newborn deaths, and accelerating progress towards Universal Health Coverage through sustained investment in evidence-based health programmes.
He appealed to all eligible women to take advantage of the free vaccination exercise, assuring them that the vaccines are safe, effective, and administered by trained healthcare professionals.
"The success of this campaign depends on the collective support of every community. Together, we can eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus and ensure that every mother and every child has the opportunity to live a healthy life," the Commissioner said.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its determination to continue implementing impactful public health interventions aimed at safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens while strengthening the state's healthcare system.
