The Plateau State Head of Civil Service, Mr. Stephen Pam Gadong has stated that a successful career in the civil service requires proper planning, discipline, continous learning and clear understanding of the responsibilities that come with public service.
The Head of Service made this assertion at the commencement of training for civil servants, which was organised by the department of training, Office of the Head of Service.
Mr. Godong, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Administration, Mrs. Rabecca Sasheet Esq. pointed out that the civil service marks the beginning of a journey of service, growth and contribution to the development of the state.
The Permanent Secretary encouraged participants to take the training seriously and to begin to prepare early not only for a productive career but for life beyond active service.
She advised that as they advance in their career, they should uphold the values of integrity, accountability, commitment and respect for the rules of the service, adding that participants should have at the back of their minds that the quality of public service depends largely on the attitudes and conducts of individual civil servants.
Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Mrs. Jummai Shekarau described the training as timely and necessary and that it did not matter that some civil servants may just be starting their career. According to her, planning for retirement should start from the very first day of employment and not at the end of one's working life.
She said the training was intended to provide civil servants with an opportunity to look beyond immediate responsibilities and start to think strategically about long-term well-being.
Mrs. Shekarau admonished all participants to participate actively in the training, expressing confidence that the knowledge to gain from the training would not only be beneficial to participants personally, but would also contribute to overall effectiveness and peace of mind through out the career.
