The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PSA) has Convicted more than 45 people during the environmental Sanitation on Saturday, with some opting for community service due to financial constraints.

Disclosing by Hon. Yop Hannatu Ahoms the Magistrate during the monthly Environmental Senitation in the State, said there are 14 different magistrate stations and they are still compiling the reports.

"Today I moved with the with the DG's convoy. The magistrates are bringing in their reports, so I really wouldn't be able to say collectively how many people were convicted and then fined eventually. But then, from the DG's convoy, we're able to convict about 45 people, and most of them paid fine." She stated

According to her, compliance was poor especially in Kufang,"but with regards to compliance, I would actually say that most of the compliance you see are on the main road, once you get into the community, you realize that people are just carrying out their businesses the way they want to carry it out."

While suggesting that, security involvement could be more proactive and she emphasizing the need for better diligence among enforcers and improve compliance.

She also suggested that, the enforcement team should be more proactive and question the role of security in enforcing Sanitation laws, and acknowledges the need to for improvement.

Hon.Ashom further emphasizes the importance of diligence among security personnel and believes that the increase involvement and diligence from security personnel would make enforcement move effective.

She assured that the goal is to create awareness to people that violating sanitation laws will go unpunished.

Also speaking the Director of Administration, Izang Pate, disclosed that this month’s general sanitation exercise is not just about sweeping the streets. It is also about saving lives, preventing flooding, and even protecting our buildings.

"So, on the Plateau, sanitation is a must because, in the areas that we visited, there is a high level of compliance, of which I’m so happy with that.

We are not happy because we visited one of the locally made beer joints, where almost 20 people were seen taking beer at 8 o’clock, which is not good because they were supposed to be there after the sanitation. That is why some people were convicted and paid fined.

He call on the proprietors of local beer joints, called Burkutu, that they should close their shops whenever we have this monthly sanitation until 10 o’clock, so that they will be allowed to go into their businesses thereafter.

He also appreciated all the enforcement officers because they did their best, they really enforced the law,and also all the journalists, in fact, they did very well, and

also plead with the community leaders, that whenever we have sanitation like this, the community leaders have a role to play because without them, we cannot achieve what we want.

Therefore, I want to call on them to always speak to their people whenever we have sanitation.

Speaking also was the Director Pam Banabas Dalyop, said this month’s sanitation was a success, even though in some areas there are hitches, but we discovered some few individuals moving during the sanitation hours, and some marketers were operating during the sanitation in some areas.

"But that notwithstanding, in fact, we had a collaboration of a team with security unions from different branches, and quite a number of people were prosecuted and fined for various offences." He stated

He said,Sanitation has come to stay, and we will make sure that each and every nook and cranny of Plateau State must adopt sanitation, because sanitation is something that we must abide by. We discovered just recently that there was an outbreak of cholera, even here in Jos. So, with that, I want to believe that creating awareness must continue.

"And I know that behavioural change is something that will not happen just once; it’s a continual process. And that is what the agency has put ahead to ensure that every part of Plateau State must adhere to sanitation laws."
