Unijos holds 127 inaugural lecture, tasks FG to eliminate confronting tropical diseases

The 127th Inaugural Lecture by the University of Jos has been held, with a focus on the challenges confronting efforts to eliminate neglected tropical diseases in Nigeria.

 

Prof. Dakul Danaan provided insights into factors contributing to the persistence of the diseases and stressed the need for stronger public health interventions.

 

The lecture, titled “The Unholy Trinity Against Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Nigeria,” was delivered by Professor Dakul Danaan Anthony, Professor of Public Health Parasitology and Epidemiology in the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Jos.

 

He explained that neglected tropical diseases are preventable and treatable, but continue to receive inadequate attention, particularly in terms of government funding and support.

 

According to him,the lecture had deepened understanding of the major interconnected challenges militating against the elimination of neglected tropical diseases in Nigeria, while highlighting the importance of research, public awareness and effective public health strategies.

 

Earlier the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Tanko Ishaya, appreciated guests for finding time to attend the inaugural lecture, describing the topic as timely, given the prevailing circumstances in the country.

 

Professor Ishaya encouraged other professors in the university to show greater commitment towards presenting their inaugural lectures, describing the exercise as an important part of an academic career.

 

Highlights of the event included the presentation of a gift to Professor Dakul Danaan, group photographs with Friends, Colleagues and Family and a traditional dance performance.
